Capital, my friend. Think through your emotions and feel through your thoughts. You article moved me to comment, but made me think objectively of the need for the feel-think balance in being human.
I wonder which end of the spectrum elicits more animal rights activists and vegans. The people who study the evidence of the atrocities committed, or the ones who just feel awful about any animals suffering. I reckon it's pretty scattershot.
Hi, Jett. It is entirely possible for a Feeler and a Thinker to reach the same conclusion. The latter could give a reasoned defense of that conclusion, while the former would appeal to their feelings.
My guess is that among animal rights activists, we will find more Feelers than Thinkers, but that will be true with respect to many subjects. Because feeling is easier than thinking, Feelers outnumber Thinkers in the population at large.
And for the record, I happen to be a Thinker who, on the basis of the research I have done, doesn’t eat meat. A chapter in my forthcoming book is devoted to explaining and defending this position.
l admire you for that William. Many of the Thinkers I've met don't seem to make changes when presented with new information that (in my opinion) should cause them to.
I consider myself as pretty far on the Feeler side with an inclination towards literature, philosophy, and spirituality. I've enjoyed listening to you on the Waking Up app. You've been a positive influence on my development for sure. I'm interested in reading your upcoming book!
Have you ever thought about this idea in the way Myers-Briggs Type Indicator model does? I mean as personality traits? One dimension is exactly thinkers vs feelers and it recognizes that, while you may have a dominant trait, you are not exclusively one or the other, like you say. Also, it helps in a way to in fact be able to measure which of the two you tend to be or use…
When I was young I believed we were logical beings that had emotion/feeling. As I aged I discovered we are emotional beings that use logic to make sense or justify our feelings. .... Thinking only people you wondered about I would guess psychopaths and maybe low narc sociopaths. Emotions are things they feign to elicit a calculated reaction.
I really do like your post. Here is how I internalized your post: when one positions oneself more to the left on your spectrum, one's thinking becomes that of an embodied thinker. This is what I try to do with myself.
