This is excellent and great advice for a Substack dilettante on the differences, and uses of a post and a note.

I'm still hoping that you post something on sculling.

I’ve actually (self) published a book about sculling: https://www.amazon.com/Two-Oars-Reflections-Sculling/dp/0615814263 See you on the water!

I read the book, which is why I was asking. I liked the focus on balance and I often use that as my "swing thought" (mixing sporting metaphors) while I row.

Well done article. I’ve been wondering snout the connection between notes, posts/articles and the newsfeed. Your last paragraph summarizes how I use Substack. Reading a post is a commitment of time and I save that for posts that align with my interests and upskilling. I enjoy notes because they’re a quick read but I’m still trying to find the right mix of notes that truly add value to my life.

Thanks for the info i am newvro substack trying to find my way..you comment on students made me think when i post it is from my mindset and feedback is hard to get...i use to look at as test scores mesured my effectiveness. Digitial eyes are a much harder read.

I THINK your article is worth THINKING about. Just a gut feeling ;)

No, but on a serious note, as a new Substack user and article writer (no notes yet), I find it both helpful and something to ponder. What you say about Substack being a Cognitive Gym is the kind of thing that pumps me up. (I’m a dad with the perfect name in both English and Japanese for making puns, so you’ll have to cut me some slack.)

Thanks for writing so honestly.

Hi, JaPanglerized. Not to worry! I’m a person for whom puns are not a form of punishment.

I agree. They are pundamental to the very punstitution upun which we stand.

Verily, you are a pundit…

Many Thanks for this informative article, especially because I’m a newbie to Substack… and never had much interest or the patience for social media. As a thinker myself, I’m enjoying Substack writers’ thought-provoking articles from my carefully curated subscriptions! 🙏🏼
